Back in 2009 Alium were asked to look at a part refurbishment of the public bar areas of the hotel. These were widely regarded as looking tired and in need of refurbishment. The existing Lounge bar, Restaurant bar and Celtic bar required separate bar personnel and were difficult to run efficiently. Alium proposed a consolidation of the Lounge and Restaurant bars, a new shared wash-up and store and a new public access to the Celtic bar. A new route from the main reception directly into the Lounge bar was also instigated. Alium were employed as Principle Designers to produce all necessary working drawings and specifications and oversaw the negotiated tender of the works.

The success of this project lead to the engagement of Alium to progress a second phase of works. This involved the refurbishment of a number of areas that abutted the central Lounge and Bars that had just been completed and included the Waterwheel room, Mill-Race room, Orangery, Garden room and main Restaurant.

Again using careful programming and a series of decants the hotels complete refurbishment began to take place. The hotels owners were keen to see its rating increased to four-star and this necessarily led to works in virtually all parts of the estate. Consultation with stakeholders resulted in agreed level of specification that would see the original country hotel aesthetic evolve in to a modern hotel, function and conferencing destination.

The Reception and entrance was also remodelled and extended to improve not just the guest’s sense of arrival but also to incorporate changing DDA regulations. Alium have worked as the hotel's design consultants ever since having been responsible not just for the refurbishment of the main hotel buildings, bars and public spaces but also all the guest rooms throughout both the Mill-block and Courtyard areas.

As part of the owners continuingly ambitious plans for the hotels growth and success Alium were also asked to design the new spa facility.
