This rather unusual residence on Honey Hill Lane in Cambridge was purchased by an existing client of Alium’s who wanted to combine its domestic qualities with new office space. Working as both Principle Designer and Contractor Alium designed a thorough reorganisation of the internal accommodation. This involved the creation of new sleeping accommodation, a gym, a new kitchen and bathrooms, an office and a lounge and entertainment space which opened directly onto a balcony that offered some of the best views across the city.

It soon became apparent when stripping out the original interior that there were issues with the original building fabric and much of the timber frame and lightweight block-work had to be replaced or made good. The client was keen to make a long term investment in the property and the services were replaced throughout. This included new underfloor heating, extensive re-insulation, new double glazed windows and doors and air-source heat pumps.

Once the buildings structure and services had been reengineered Alium set-about creating a functional yet modern interior that made maximum use of the houses 4-storey height and comparatively small foot-print. The building location in a Conservation area made changing the façade difficult but daylight penetration was maximised through a combination of the new window design and finishes pallet. The only obvious external change was the removal of the asymmetrical ground floor garage-door infill of 20 years ago and its replacement with a new obscured glazing system.

Internally the understated colour pallet of whites, coupled with natural materials such as oak and slate was combined with a variety of colour accents in the various furniture items selected. On the upper floors these were also selected in order to compliment the significant level of external natural vegetation that was visible from inside.
